Los Angeles, CA headquartered Viking Cruises, known for its Scandinavian design and immersive travel experiences, announced plans to launch its first river cruise in India with the debut of the Viking Brahmaputra in late 2027. This announcement marks an expansion for the brand.
The newly designed ship will host 80 guests in 40 spacious cabins, each featuring floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors and private verandas that offer stunning views of India’s northeastern landscapes. Spanning three decks, the vessel will also house a spa, fitness center, and an open-air Sky Bar on the upper deck.
Central to this new offering is the 15-day “Wonders of India” itinerary, which blends a river journey with guided land explorations. Guests will sail between Guwahati and Nimati Ghat located in the north eastern sate of Assam.

En route, guests will see spiritual temples, vibrant riverside villages, and the rich biodiversity of Kaziranga National Park—including its famed one-horned rhinos and buffalos. They’ll also visit Majuli, one of the world’s largest river islands, known for its unique culture and traditions.
Enhancing the experience, the itinerary includes land stays in Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur, immersing guests in the famous Golden Triangle. Highlights of this segment include visits to the Taj Mahal, Old Delhi’s historic streets, and Jaipur’s Palace of Winds. A total of 13 guided tours come included in the cruise fare, ensuring a comprehensive cultural journey.
Torstein Hagen, Viking’s Chairman and CEO, expressed excitement over the expansion, citing India’s rich heritage and natural wonders as ideal for the brand’s immersive approach to travel. He noted the increasing popularity of Indian ports on Viking’s ocean cruises and emphasized the opportunity to offer guests a deeper connection with the country via river cruising.
Viking’s new venture joins other established operators such as Uniworld, Avalon Waterways, Pandaw, and Antara River Cruises, all offering scenic journeys along India’s Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers. With its new Brahmaputra offering, Viking aims to deliver a culturally rich voyage for global travelers seeking luxury and authenticity in equal measure.
