How the innovation came to being:
Fascinated by the sophistication that went into the making of a Formula 1 car, founder Mudit Dandwate, on graduation, joined a company where he would provide analytics and simulation software to high performance car manufacturers. On losing a family member because of poor monitoring and delayed intervention in a hospital, he and his colleague Gaurav Parchani, who subsequently became a co-founder, came up with an idea: “What if the method we use to monitor vibrations to capture the health of a car, be used to capture the health of human body as well?”
Both the mechanical engineers from thr Indian Institute of Technology found research papers on Ballistocardiography, a science of extracting biomarkers from vibrations. However, the designs were extremely complex and they realized that they needed to overhaul the design.
It was then that the two engineers decided to work full time on their goal. Dandwate let go of his job; Parchani left the Masters program at Carnegie Mellon. They set up Bangalore-based Turtle Shell Technologies Private Limited which created Dozee, India’s 1st AI-based contactless Remote Patient Monitoring and Early Warning System for continuous patient monitoring.
The Medical Device:
Dozee uses AI-powered Ballistocardiography for contactless vitals monitoring. The technology is patented and it has been clinically proven to be 98.4% accurate according to the company.

The firm’s technology involves using a smart sensor underneath a patient’s bedsheet on a hospital bed. It tracks the micro-vibrations produced by the body when the heart pumps blood, and keeps track of a patient’s heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation, and skin temperature with clinical grade accuracy. It also tracks sleep quality while flagging indicators of sleep apnea. These observations are then translated into data and processed by artificial intelligence-based algorithms which, if anything unusual is detected, can alert nurses and doctors at a central monitoring station.
By automating patient monitoring through Dozee, nearly 2.5 hours of nursing time is saved every day per patient. It is a ‘Made in India’ innovation with global standards in patient safety, data security, privacy, and reliability.
The medical device received US FDA 510 (K) clearance. The company was awarded the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry’s Healthcare Excellence Award 2022 in the Digital Innovation in Healthcare category.
