25 percent increase in labor savings on complex laser-welded assemblies
Client Challenge
A Midwestern producer of illumination products for mining, industrial, and wet or hazardous environments was faced with the retirement of many highly-skilled in-house workers and could not easily find or local talent in its home city. Specifically, the client was interested in stainless steel laser welding capabilities and asked Amritt to look overseas.
Amritt-Client Process
Based on an analysis of 63 representative component drawings and process sheets, Amritt conducted a vigorous search and evaluation of small and mid-sized precision machine and fabrication shops experienced in challenging laser welding initiatives across India. After reviewing the initial findings from our three-stage process, the client requested that we focus on candidates in Maharashtra and Goa. Upon concluding site visits and reference checks, Amritt recommended four different shops in two urban areas. The client chose to place business with two of the finalists, following Amritt’s guidance in the contract negotiations. After about a year, the client made a minority investment in one company and consolidated all its India business with this entity.
Impact
By securing a reliable supplier, the client survived the retirement of its key skilled workers without impacting its own customers. The client also gained some degree of control over the shop in India without buying it completely and experienced a substantial labor savings of over 25 percent. Its minority investment has reaped rewards, as the Indian supplier has won other challenging international orders.
