Consolidation with nontraditional specialized shops fulfills specific quality and volume requirements
Client Challenge
One of the largest suppliers of industrial plumbing fixtures on the East Coast found itself heavily dependent on Chinese suppliers and sought more diversity. Products included many nonferrous materials produced via pressure die casting, forging, powder metallurgy, brazing, welding, electroplating, and chrome, nickel, zinc, and tin plating.
Amritt-Client Process
Amritt’s initial analysis found many technically qualified companies, but many did not have the capacity to meet the client’s high-volume needs. Therefore, the Amritt team in India searched beyond the traditional Indian industrial centers to find highly specialized fabrication shops. The most appropriate companies turned out to be capable of creating several purpose-built machines for the client’s needs. While initial Indian prices were higher, Amritt worked closely with the client and the suppliers to streamline the manufacturing process, and in a few cases, use alternate materials or adjust the finishing process to Indian capabilities. These efforts resulted in competitive Indian pricing for equivalent quality.
Impact
The client decided to work with six shops located in one particular mid-sized Indian city. The client was able to find a satisfactory second source for about 60% of its Chinese supply base.
