WTTC: India Could Rise to Fourth Place Among Tourism Economies

My friend shared an article with this image from Visual Capitalist. India now has more tourism revenue than Italy and Spain. I predict that its tourist income will exceed that of Japan by 2030 as new hotels are being built, the highways and airports have already been improved. River cruises are taking hold. And “accidental tourists” who come to India for business, but then get charmed by its diversity, colors and festivals; they return with their families and friends.

The data for this visualization comes from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). It shows the total economic contribution of each country’s tourism sector in 2024, measured in U.S. dollars.

This chart highlights the top 10 countries by the size of their tourism economies, encompassing everything from hotel stays and flights, to attractions and services.

The WTTC predicts China will overtake the U.S. in the next decade, while India could rise to fourth place.

Tourism is a major economic driver for many nations, powering jobs, infrastructure, and global connections.
