White House Committed to Confirm Eric Garcetti as India Envoy

The Biden administration continues to seek the expeditious confirmation of the Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti as the ambassador to India, following a long delay in the confirmation of his nomination.

The post of the U.S. Ambassador to India has been vacant since early 2021 when the previous U.S. envoy Kenneth I Juster completed his tenure. The current U.S. head of mission in India is A Elizabeth Jones, who is serving as the Chargé d’Affaires in the absence of a full-time ambassador.

In January this year, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmed the nomination of Garcetti to be the U.S. Ambassador to India. However, the nomination needed to be confirmed by a majority of the U.S. Senate.

The White House said it respects the U.S. relationship with India and considers Garcetti’s appointment as the U.S. envoy a priority.

After the midterm polls in the U.S., the Democrats now have 50 seats in the Senate as against the 49 of the Republicans, retaining control of the upper chamber of the American Congress. Even if the Republicans win another seat in the run-off in Georgia on December 6, Vice President Kamala Harris can always cast her tie-breaking vote in favor of the Democrats.
