Two Korean Firms to Manufacture Zydus Cadila’s Covid Vaccine

Ahmedabad, India headquartered pharmaceutical firm Zydus Cadila announced that its Covid-19 plasmid DNA vaccine ZyCoV-D will be manufactured in Korea by two firms – Enzychem Lifesciences and Hanmi Pharmaceutical.

The firms have begun the optimization process for transferring technology and setting up production facilities to manufacture the Indian-developed vaccine starting in the second quarter of this year. Under the agreement up to 80 million doses will be produced per year.

Approved by the Drugs Controller General of India in August for emergency use for people above 12 years, ZyCoV-D is the world’s first DNA vaccine. As it is not sensitive to temperature, unlike other mRNA vaccines, the Indian vaccine can be stored at between two to eight degrees Celsius. It can also be stored at 25 degrees Celsius for three months, allowing for longer stability in global supply.

The vaccine will be exported to several countries in Latin America, and Asia’s New Southern Policy member countries.
