Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, aims to build the world’s largest data center in the city of Jamnagar, Gujarat, to strengthen its AI push in India.
The proposed facility is set to have a capacity of three gigawatts, significantly surpassing Microsoft’s current largest 600-megawatt site in Virginia. This ambitious project is estimated to cost between $20 billion and $30 billion.

This initiative follows the October 2024 Nvidia AI Summit announcement, where Reliance and Nvidia declared their plans to develop AI infrastructure together. [Nvidia also formed a similar alliance with Tata Group, indicating a strategic focus on AI growth in India.]
Nvidia committed to providing its advanced Blackwell AI processors for a one-gigawatt data center that Reliance plans to construct. At the summit, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized India’s potential in AI, advocating for domestic AI development to avoid exporting data to import intelligence. Ambani echoed this sentiment, highlighting the opportunity to use AI to foster equality and prosperity, noting India’s strong digital connectivity infrastructure.
In September 2024, Reliance and Nvidia partnered to create AI supercomputers and large language models (LLM) tailored to Indian languages. The Jamnagar data center project is seen as a groundbreaking development that could strain Reliance’s financial resources despite its $26 billion in cash reserves. It mirrors the disruptive approach of Reliance Jio in the telecom sector, aiming to reduce AI inferencing costs for businesses.
The data center will utilize renewable energy sources, including nearby solar, wind, and green hydrogen projects, though experts caution that maintaining a stable energy supply may still require fossil fuels or large-scale battery storage. If successful, the Jamnagar facility will significantly boost India’s data center capacity, currently under one gigawatt, providing a substantial competitive edge in the AI market.
The Indian government has committed over $120 million to support startups, AI projects, and LLM development. Despite challenges such as the nascent semiconductor industry, the collaboration between Reliance, Nvidia, and Tata Group underscores India’s commitment to becoming a global AI leader. This ambitious plan, if executed effectively, could fast-track India’s AI advancement, making it a formidable player on the international stage.
