NVIDIA works to support AI in India

Santa Clara-based NVIDIA and Mumbai-based Reliance Industries announced a collaboration to develop India’s own foundation large language model trained on the nation’s diverse languages and tailored for generative AI applications.

The companies will also work together to build an AI infrastructure that is “over an order of magnitude more powerful than the fastest supercomputer in India today,” they said.

NVIDIA will provide access to the most advanced NVIDIA® GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip and NVIDIA DGX™ Cloud, an AI supercomputing service in the cloud. GH200 marks a fundamental shift in computing architecture that provides exceptional performance and a large memory bandwidth.

Reliance will be responsible for the management of the AI cloud infrastructure. Additionally, Reliance will create AI applications and services for their 450 million Jio customers and provide energy-efficient AI infrastructure to scientists, developers, and startups across India.

“We are delighted to partner with Reliance to build state-of-the-art AI supercomputers in India,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “India has scale, data, and talent. With the most advanced AI computing infrastructure, Reliance can build its own large language models that power generative AI applications made in India, for the people of India.”

“At Jio, we are committed to fueling India’s technology renaissance by democratizing access to cutting-edge technologies, and our collaboration with NVIDIA is a significant step in this direction,” said Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm.

Separately, the NVIDIA partnership will be used by India’s software services exporter, Tata Consultancy Services to build and process generative AI apps and a supercomputer, the companies said in a statement. Additionally, Tata Consultancy will upskill its 600,000-strong workforce by leveraging the partnership. The deal will also catalyze the AI-led transformation across Tata Group companies that range from manufacturing to consumer businesses, the statement added.
