L.A. Mayor May Become Ambassador to India

Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles is being considered by the Biden administration for the post of Ambassador to India, which is currently vacant.

According to the Los Angeles Times, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was asked  at a news briefing about a possible Garcetti appointment. “I don’t have any personnel announcements or assessments to make here from the podium, but hopefully we’ll have some more formal announcements on ambassadors soon,” she said. The mayor was an early supporter of  Joe Biden in the presidential race and served as a co-chair of his campaign committee.

The Biden administration has signaled India will play a key role in helping to counter China’s ambitions in the Indo-Pacific region. Garcetti is a also a potential candidate for a Presidential run and sending him to India for  two or more years would give him the international experience with a key Quad ally, but also make it harder for him to launch a run in 2024, in case Biden decides not to run again.
