New Delhi-headquartered Jindal Group announced a commitment to invest approximately $22 billion to develop 18 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity over the next two decades, marking one of the largest private‑sector nuclear initiatives in India’s history, and contribute to the government’s ambitious 100 GW nuclear capacity target by 2047.
This investment forms a central pillar of the company’s long‑term decarbonization strategy and its vision for clean, reliable, baseload energy.
As part of the program, media reports state that the Group is engaged in discussions with leading global nuclear technology providers, including EDF (France), Westinghouse (United States), and Rosatom (Russia). The company is evaluating a diverse portfolio of next‑generation reactor technologies ranging from 220 MW small modular reactors to 700 MW PHWRs, 1,200 MW VVER units, and 1,650 MW EPR reactors.
“We are thoroughly evaluating all major international technologies to build a robust and future‑ready nuclear fleet,” said Naveen Ahlawat, Head – Sustainability & Decarbonization, Jindal Steel. “Our approach is technology‑agnostic, and our priority is to secure large‑scale, proven reactor systems that can support India’s growing energy needs.”
The Group has initiated key preparatory activities, including seismic studies, geotechnical assessments, and environmental impact evaluations, to qualify land for the first phase of development. According to Ahlawat, private participation at this scale represents a new chapter for India’s nuclear sector. “There is no established playbook for private nuclear development in India. We are building it from the ground up, beginning with at least two reactors before expanding to full capacity.”
The group, engaged in steel, mining, power, renewables, and real estate sectors, plans to debut into the nuclear space with Jindal Nuclear Power Private Limited, a 100 per cent subsidiary of Jindal Renewables.
