The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), a United Nations organization, announced plans to build an innovation center in India and start operations by July 2019. The ITU works with nations and companies alike to create international technology standards. The move by the ITU to setup an office and innovation center within India signals a willingness to recognize India’s technology contributions to the global community.

India’s Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan said, “In the last four years, India has increased its participation around five-fold in terms of technical contributions. ITU has recognized it and hence a decision was taken to set-up its regional office in India — its first innovation center anywhere in the world.”
The ITU innovation center will coordinate with agencies around the world for joint
research, collaboration, and standardization in areas such as artificial intelligence, 5G, as well as other technology advancements as they arise.
