India's Institute of Technology Develops Device to Monitor Vital Signs

The Indian Institute of Technology at Madras (now known as Chennai), in collaboration with MedIoTek Health Systems based in the same city, have developed  wearable medical device called VinCense. The algorithm for this device was developed by the Institute while MedIoTek worked on the mobile health technology. The device can be used to remotely monitor vital signs of a patient including pulse-rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, skin temperature, and blood pressure.

VinCense consists of three components: a watch-like wearable device, the mobile app, and the Web interface. Real-time data recorded by the device is stored in the patent-pending secured cloud from where healthcare providers can access vitals using an intuitive interface, said the Institute.

How the VinCense device works

Founder and managing director of MedIoTek Health Systems, Sharmila Devadoss, is an engineer in electronics and computer engineering. She has studied both in India as well as at Portland State University.
