According to the article, India is in the process of acquiring an icebreaker ship for conducting scientific and business exploration in the polar regions. This icebreaker is estimated to cost $144 million customized with several laboratories for carrying out experiments in the Arctic and Antarctica. These ships can cut through 1.5-2 meter thick ice and has the capability of 45 days of endurance. In the past they had to hire ships from private parties in Russia and Norway for short durations.
In addition to scientific research, India is interested for business ventures related to mineral resources, fisheries, and shorter sea routes in the Arctic. Scientists can also study changes in the ocean temperature and how temperature and salinity vary in different areas.
