India successfully tested its nuclear-capable surface-to-surface ballistic missile Agni-5, that can pinpoint a target at a range of 3,000 miles, from A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Island located off the coast of the state of Odisha.
The missile, developed by Defense Research and Development Organization, and government ownedBharat Dynamics Ltd., weighs c 110,000 pounds. It is 5.7′ tall with a diameter of 6.5′. Its 3,300 pounds warhead will be placed on top of three-stage rocket boosters that are powered by solid fuel. It is equipped with a ring laser gyroscope inertial navigation system that works with satellite guidance, and can be launched from mobile launchers.
Scientists note that at its fastest, the Indian intercontinental ballistic missile will be 24 times faster than the speed of sound traveling 5 miles per second.
