Project Overview
This collaboration, which was formally incorporated in April 2023, combines Corning’s Velocity Vial technology with SGD Pharma’s expertise in vial conversion to address global capacity and quality demands for primary glass packaging.
Production Capacity and Technology
The plant specializes in the production of Type I borosilicate glass tubing, a critical material for packaging injectable drugs, biologics, diagnostics, and delivery systems. Production is expected to scale to a capacity of 13,000 tons by early 2026, which provides enough material to manufacture approximately 2.2 billion vials annually.
By co-locating tubing production and vial converting, the partners aim to improve sustainability, enhance filling-line productivity, and ensure faster lead times for the regional pharmaceutical market.
Since the groundbreaking in June 2023, the facility has progressed through several phases, including the start of vial production in March 2024. Currently, the plant provides direct employment for 150 people and generates further indirect job opportunities in the surrounding region, strengthening the local supply chain for essential medicines.
Operational Objective
To localize the supply chain for pharmaceutical packaging, reduce lead times for regional customers, and integrate Corning’s coating technology with SGD’s conversion expertise.
