Canadian Prime Minister Invites Modi to G7 Summit

Canadian Prime Minister Invites Modi to G7 Summit

As diplomatic ties between India and Canada improve, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, signaled a step toward renewed engagement between the two nations – he invited Indian Prime Minister Modi to participate in the G7 summit in Alberta. On receiving the invitation, Modi confirmed his attendance. Canadian opposition leader Pierre Poilievre has voiced strong support for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation.

Poilievre emphasized the strategic importance of India, noting its role as one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing economies. Speaking to reporters, he highlighted Canada’s need to expand trade in natural gas, civilian nuclear technology, and other resources with India. He also stressed the necessity of collaborating on security and trade matters at the summit. The Conservative leader made it clear that his party recognizes the importance of India’s presence at the forum and urged the government to prioritize security issues in discussions with Modi.

The G7 summit, scheduled for June 15-17 in Kananaskis, Canada, comes at a crucial juncture in India-Canada relations, which had deteriorated significantly in the previous year. Carney’s invitation to Modi marks an effort to mend relations, with his outreach—made during his first call with Modi since assuming office in April—being widely perceived as an attempt to reset the partnership. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs acknowledged the leaders’ commitment to working together with mutual respect and shared interests.

Carney stressed that India’s participation is logical given its economic standing and influence in global supply chains.

With Canada hosting the summit as the current G7 chair, Modi’s participation reflects a broader effort to reestablish diplomatic collaboration while addressing key global issues. The event will serve as an opportunity for India and Canada to engage in meaningful discussions on trade, security, and economic cooperation, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening ties.
