President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will visit India on February 24 – 25, 2020. The President and The First Lady will travel to New Delhi, the capital and Ahmedabad, the capital of the state of Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state. Trump is the first American President to visit Ahmedabad while in office.

Every American President since Bill Clinton has traveled to India to promote both business and political alignment. Some years ago, Amritt’s Gunjan Bagla traveled to India as part of the Presidential business delegation to Mumbai and New Delhi.
- -India’s location, size and economic growth make it the obvious counterweight to China in the eyes of American policymakers.
- -The relationship is deepening, particularly in the military dimension. India has also recently shown “a greater willingness to call out aggressive Chinese behavior,” says Milan Vaishnav of the Carnegie Endowment.
- There have been minor tensions with the White House over trade, but a modest deal on that front is expected when Trump visits later this month. U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer is expected to depart for India today to try to finalize a deal.
- In addition it is likely that India will announce the purchase of 24 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters for the Indian navy, worth over $2.6 billion. Since 9/11 India has bought over $17 billion of defense hardware from American companies.
At Amritt, we are excited that both Republican and Democrats continue to be equally supportive of a deeper and wider relationship with India. We have helped and advised hundreds of American companies in their quest to develop a supply chain from India, to establish engineering and R&D centers in India and most of all to develop India as a market for American products, technology and services.
