Walmart, the largest retailer in the United States, recently announced a strategic partnership with Hero Ecotech, a company, located in the state of Punjab, to expand its selection of bicycles. Under the Concord brand, Hero Ecotech created a “cruiser-style” bicycle for adults.
These new cruiser bicycles, now available in Walmart stores, are made using over 90 percent of raw materials sourced from India. India’s ambassador to the U.S., Taranjit Singh Sandhu, shared a message regarding the launch on social media, with a picture of a blue bicycle at a Walmart store.
Sandhu wrote, “Make in India, Make for the World!” This launch aligns with Walmart’s efforts to significantly increase exports from India, with a goal of reaching $10 billion annually by 2027.
In a statement, Walmart revealed its collaboration with Hero Ecotech to diversify its bicycle range. Walmart’s Andrea Albright said, “Our goal is to provide high-quality products at affordable prices. Our collaboration with Hero Ecotech supports that goal and demonstrates manufacturing growth in India.”
Walmart initiated the Walmart Vriddhi program in 2019 to empower approximately 50,000 Indian MSMEs by assisting them in modernizing, scaling up, and realizing aspirations in domestic and international markets.
Hero Ecotech manufacturers mobility products in India and is the country’s largest exporter of bicycles to over 80 countries. Hero Ecotech’s chairperson Vijay Munjal said, “We are proud to be among the first Indian-built products joining Walmart’s bicycle category.” He encouraged other Indian manufacturers to explore opportunities with Walmart.
