U.S. Secretary of State to Embark on First Official Visit to India

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will set out on his first official four-day visit to India from May 23 to 26.  Upon being confirmed in his role in 2025, Rubio’s first meeting included India’s Foreign Minister Dr S Jayashankar. It is not typical for a senior American cabinet official to spend this much time in India.

State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott and the U.S. Embassy in India confirmed the trip, stating that they were looking forward to his maiden visit, which will also celebrate 250 years of American indepnendence

During his stay, Rubio will hold high-level engagements with senior Indian officials to discuss energy security, trade, and defense cooperation — central pillars of the India-U.S. partnership.

Amid global market volatility, the New Delhi meetings are expected to consolidate ongoing dialogues regarding defense modernization, technology transfer, and joint initiatives. Additionally, both nations aim to expand collaboration in emerging sectors, including critical minerals, advanced technologies, and maritime security, reinforcing their shared trajectory in the Indo-Pacific region.

A major highlight of the trip will be Rubio’s participation in the ministerial-level Quad meeting hosted by India in New Delhi on May 26. U.S. Ambassador Sergio Gor added that preparations for the Quad dialogue are already underway and noted that Rubio is keen to explore different parts of the country beyond the national capital. India was expected to host the Quad meeting of heads of state (Australia, India, Japan and the United States but that has been delayed for  for over two years.

To showcase the diversity of India’s cultural and strategic landscape, Secretary Rubio’s itinerary includes stops in Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi.

Presided over by Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and attended by Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu, the Quad meeting will deliberate on exigent global challenges, including the fallout of the West Asia crisis. Secretary Rubio’s presence underscores Washington’s intent to maintain robust momentum in bilateral ties while addressing critical regional and global issues.

Gor expressed enthusiasm for Secretary Rubio’s upcoming visit, emphasizing that Washington deeply values its expanding partnership with New Delhi. In a post on X, he welcomed his “good friend,” noting that the U.S. remains committed to strengthening bilateral ties for the benefit of both nations and global stability.
