Newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, arrived officially to New Delhi to emphasize the continued engagement between the United States and India regarding a long-awaited trade agreement. During a formal welcome event, Gor announced that a high-level call to further discuss the deal was scheduled. While Gor described the bilateral relationship as potentially the “most consequential” of the century, his arrival comes during a period of diplomatic and economic uncertainty

The primary obstacle to the deal remains a series of trade disputes that intensified in August, when the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on Indian goods. These penalties were largely linked to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. While India has defended these purchases as necessary for its national energy security, the U.S. has used tariffs to pressure Delhi to diversify its energy sources. Furthermore, Washington continues to push for greater access to India’s agricultural sector—a demand that Indian negotiators have historically resisted, in order to protect its huge number of farmers.
