Tesla is making strides toward launching in India, with its subsidiary Tesla India Motor & Energy now seeking homologation and certification for two electric vehicles: the Model Y and Model 3.
Homologation examines whether vehicles meet all local regulatory requirements, covering everything from structural integrity and safety systems to emissions compliance and electrical system safety. For Tesla, successfully navigating this certification process will be a step closer toward establishing its presence in India
The certification application follows Tesla’s recent selection of its first showroom location in Mumbai, indicating the company is moving forward with concrete plans to establish operations in the Indian market. According to reports from Indo-Asian News Service or IANS, Tesla’s initial strategy will involve importing fully assembled vehicles rather than local manufacturing.
Tesla’s approach of beginning with imported vehicles follows a pattern the company has used when entering other international markets, typically transitioning to local production only after establishing demand and market presence. The focus on the Model Y and Model 3 suggests Tesla is targeting India with its more affordable vehicle options rather than leading with premium offerings such as the Model S or Model X.
