Mumbai-based Sun Pharma, signed a licensing agreement with Sun Pharma Advanced Research Company (SPARC) to commercialize the drug benzyl alcohol and propylene glycol-free phenobarbital sodium powder, SEZABY for the treatment of neonatal seizures, in the U.S. market.

SPARC submitted a new drug application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for this medication in February 2022.
Sun Pharma will pay SPARC $10 million upfront. SPARC will also be eligible to receive milestone payments contingent upon the achievement of regulatory and sales milestones, as well as tiered royalties on sales.

Anil Raghavan CEO, SPARC said the medication is designed to minimize the risk of neonatal gasping syndrome, a life-threatening condition in newborns.
Sun Pharma CEO North America Abhay Gandhi noted, “As the first and only product specifically indicated to treat seizures in term and pre-term infants, SEZABY has the potential to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families.”
