Starlink is on the cusp of launching its satellite internet services in India, having cleared a major hurdle by receiving approval for its Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) license from India’s Department of Telecommunications. Starlink will be the third satellite internet company to be given a license for providing services in the country.

This breakthrough comes after a four-year wait, with Starlink agreeing to all regulatory and security conditions, including establishing a local command-and-control center and enabling interception capabilities. While the GMPCS license is secured, final approval from IN-SPACe is still pending but expected soon.
Concurrently, the Indian government is finalizing new spectrum allocation rules that will impact Starlink and other satellite communication providers such as Reliance Jio and Airtel.
