SpaceX’s Starlink is conducting final security tests in India, a mandatory step before launching its commercial broadband services in the country.
- These security tests are a crucial part of India’s required security clearance process for all telecom operators.
- A key remaining regulatory hurdle is the final pricing framework for satellite services, which the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has yet to release.
- If TRAI issues these guidelines by the end of this year, Starlink could begin providing internet connectivity to Indian homes as early as 2026.
- In preparation, Starlink has also leased office space in Mumbai for five years and is establishing nine teleports across India for connectivity.
- Starlink will face significant competition from domestic and international rivals, including Jio SpaceFiber and Eutelsat’s OneWeb, making the Indian satellite internet market highly competitive.
