The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will mass-produce solar cells that can be used in its space programs. ISRO has imported technology from the U.S. and will start manufacturing these products under the supervision of its scientists at the state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited based in Bangalore.
Unlike the conventional solar cells used for generating electricity on land, these solar cells are highly sophisticated and efficient; they help to power a satellite in space and keep it functional for its lifespan. K Sivan, chairman of ISRO, explained that 10,000-15,000 solar cells are imported for a big satellite such as the Gsat which is used for communication. To develop the country’s heaviest satellite Gsat-11, ISRO imported 20,000 solar cells.

Once a satellite is in space, its solar panels convert solar energy to electricity that powers all functions on the spacecraft.
