Built by the Hyderabad development center of Microsoft India, Skype Lite is an exclusive optimized-for-India app that provides a seamless experience in messaging, audio and video calling, where users can sign up via their mobile number or their regular Skype id. The company says it has adjusted algorithms and bit rate to ensure call quality is maintained, but with less data usage.
Other features include a separate tab for bots in order to allow businesses to communicate with users. So far, travel, informational, and game bots have been included. An integrated camera inside the messaging section allows a user to just swipe up to share photos, and the lightweight app supports seven Indian languages — Gujarati, Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu.
To make it easier for a user to differentiate between important and junk text messages, Microsoft has used artificial intelligence that segregates normal text messages, Skype messages and promotional texts under three different categories, reports the Economic Times.
