Silicon Valley Tuning In to India's Music Industry

India’s internet boom has tech giants turning to the country’s 560 million internet users, and massive music industry. Facebook signed licensing deals with some of the biggest record labels in Bollywood that will allow users of Facebook and Instagram in India to add songs to their posts.

Google rolled out its YouTube Music in India, and for $1.50 a month it offers a service free of ads. Users of Google Play Music, will automatically get access to its YouTube Music.

Spotify added a million users in India in less than a week of its launch in March this year. Its charges are $1.65 per month, 80 percent less than in the U.S.

The market for Indian music fans is getting increasingly crowded. Besides Spotify, Apple and Amazon, the Indian market has local players such as Gaana, backed by China’s Tencent, and JioSaavn, owned by Reliance.
