Powering One Million Homes: Inside India’s Giant New Battery Project

Adani Green Energy Ltd. (AGEL), India’s largest renewable energy company, has fully commissioned a 3.37 gigawatt-hour (GWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at its clean energy hub in Khavda, Gujarat. The milestone represents the world’s largest single-location battery deployment outside China and ranks among the fastest utility-scale storage rollouts globally, taking just 10 months from the start of on-site construction to completion.

The facility integrates lithium-ion battery technology with advanced energy management software to maximize grid efficiency and response times. At 3.37 GWh, the system can store enough clean electricity to power nearly one million homes for an entire day. Thiscapacity acts as a buffer for the local grid, absorbing excess renewable generation and releasing it during peak hours to ensure dependable, 24/7 green power.

“Large-scale energy storage will play a defining role in the next phase of the clean energy transition,” said Sagar Adani, Executive Director of AGEL. “As renewable capacity scales rapidly, storage infrastructure becomes critical for delivering reliable, round-the-clock clean power. With this commissioning, AGEL is strengthening the foundation for a resilient, flexible energy system.”

AGEL is moving to expand its storage footprint, with plans to add more than 10 GWh of capacity in fiscal year 2027, scaling to 50 GWh over the next five years.

The BESS project is strategically located within AGEL’s broader Khavda renewable energy mega-project, where the company aims to build out 30 GW of clean energy by 2029 — 9.9 GW of which is already online. Situated on barren land, the 207.72 square miles site is roughly nine times the size of Manhattan.

As a major player in global decarbonization, AGEL operates India’s largest renewable portfolio, spanning 19.7 GW across 12 states, with a target of reaching 50 GW by 2030. The company focuses heavily on leveraging technology to drive down the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) while maintaining strict environmental standards; its operating assets are currently certified as water-positive, single-use plastic-free, and zero waste-to-landfill.
