The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, will participate in the 4th Nuclear Security Summit on March 31 and April 1, 2016 at Washington D.C. More than 50 heads of state, among other leaders, will gather at the Washington Convention Center for closed-door meetings and policy discussions. Modi is scheduled to have bilateral meetings during the summit. 40 prime ministers and presidents are at the meeting, with the exception of Russia, the UN Security Council, and the BRIC countries are fully represented.
The Fissile Materials Working Group will hold a side summit, involving 200 nuclear security experts and nongovernmental organizations. A Nuclear Industry Summit will feature industry and policy experts including Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
The external affairs ministry’s spokesperson Vikas Swaroop said the prime minister will highlight India’s safety and non-proliferation records at the summit, as also make some specific announcements and proposals with regard to nuclear security. The 2016 Summit will take stock of the progress of implementation of the previous communiqué’s work plan as also outline an agenda for the future, Swaroop added.
Additionally, the Nuclear Security Summit will discuss cyber threats to nuclear installations. Of the 24 states with weapons-usable nuclear materials and the 23 states that have nuclear facilities but no weapons-usable nuclear materials, 13 received a maximum score for cyber security under the nuclear security index, but 20 states score zero since they do not have basic requirements to protect their nuclear facilities from cyber attacks, reports dna.
