In Chakan, near Pune in western India, the medical device unit of Philips is building out a$42 million factory. The company has been present in India for over 90 years and has had operations of various kinds in Pune, some of which it still owns.
Over the long term, “We are talking about a thousand new employees that we are hiring. They are very sophisticated engineers, with different types of skills ,” Philips India Managing Director Daniel Mazon told PTI. Make in India is a “strategic initiative for Philips”, which is becoming stronger from this investment in the expansion of the manufacturing capacity according to him as quoted in Money Control.
The company will product its Affiniti range of ultrasound machines from there for sale in India. In addition components for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), consoles, and other electronics assemblies are going to be exported from India to worldwide destinations.
In addition, Philips will also expand its operation at Bangalore by 2023. “The new campus that we are building near the airport in Bengaluru will be able to house 5,000 employees,” he added.
