New York-based Pepsico continues to innovate its snack product mix to meet the Indian market’s fast growing demand. In June, it introduced Lay’s Wafer Style, a crunchy snack inspired by the homemade papad ( a thin fried or roasted lentil/rice flour wafer) that is popular in the south Indian market. These deep-fried wafers are designed to complement rice that is served for lunch and dinner. Lays will also be adding other traditional snacks such as murukku (a fried snack made of rice flour) banana chips, and tapioca chips among others.

As the second largest provider of snacks in India, Pepsico integrates regional consumer preferences and tastes into its product mix. Snacks vary throughout India based on spices and textures that are popular in the area. Dilen Gandhi, senior director of marketing at Pepsico India says, “Wherever we see an opportunity for a local connect with consumers, we have been and will continue to customize our offerings accordingly.”
