SiliconIndia News reports that India’s pending application for entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group will come up for consideration at its plenary session in June 2016. The grouping which was set up in 1975 as a reaction to India’s 1974 nuclear test needs consensus for admitting new members as also to take key decisions.
Last month Sushma Swaraj, Minister for External Affairs, discussed the issue with visiting Nuclear Suppliers Group chairman Rafael Grossi, who indicated that he would take it up with the group’s 48 members.
The United States has extended its support to India’s entry into the Missile Technology Control Regime in the coming couple of months, and will follow through to facilitate it in the Nuclear Suppliers Group due to India’s clean non-proliferation record and tight export control laws. Washington has also granted a waiver to India for nuclear trade with those willing, but there are many technologies that it still cannot access due to Missile Technology Control Regime, the Wassenar Arrangement and Australia Group.
