Novartis’ Cardiac Drug to Go Off-Patent in January

Swiss-American multinational pharmaceutical, Novartis AG‘s drug Vymada or Entresto used for patients with heart failure becomes off-patent in January, 2023

Heart failure is a progressive chronic syndrome characterized by a decrease in the functions of the heart and quality of life. 23 million people are affected by it worldwide, while in India its prevalence is estimated at 1% of the population.

Industry sources say that this is one of the fastest growing drugs in the cardiac market in India where it is sold as Sacubitril and Valsartan. Globally this drug has a market of an estimated $4 billion.

Many Indian pharmaceutical companies have evinced interest in marketing generic versions of the drug. These include Torrent Pharma, Sun Pharma, Cipla, Lupin, USV. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories acquired the cardiovascular brand Cidmus from Novartis earlier this year for $60 million

India’s price regulator is keeping a close watch on key drugs going off-patent. The federal government and the pharma industry are working on a pricing mechanism for drugs that are going off-patent.
