Speaking at the Economic Times Global Business Summit in New Delhi at a panel entitled “The Future of Entertainment,” Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said, “Given the consumer base, the next 100 million [subscribers] for us is coming from India.” He added that the country is “the most phenomenal example anywhere in the world of low Internet costs and expansion of 4G. We didn’t see that coming and we just got lucky on that one.”
India has an estimated 155 million pay TV subscribers, and Netflix is available for a monthly subscription of $7.80 to $12.30. According to Media Partners estimates, India currently has just over 500,000 subscribers and by 2020 this figure could well reach 2.5 million.
