Microsoft announced its largest investment in Asia to date, committing $17.5 billion to India over four years, spanning from calendar year 2026 to 2029.
This capital injection is designed to advance the nation’s cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure, workforce skilling, and operational capabilities.
The funding builds upon a previous $3 billion investment announced in 2025, which remains on track for completion by the end of 2026. The strategy, formalized following a meeting between Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is anchored by three specific pillars: scale, skills, and sovereignty.
A central priority of this investment is the expansion of hyperscale infrastructure to support India’s transition to an AI-first economy. Microsoft is currently developing the India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad, which is scheduled to go live in mid-2026. This will be the company’s largest hyperscale region in the country, featuring three availability zones. Concurrently, Microsoft is expanding its existing data center regions in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune to ensure greater resilience and low-latency performance for enterprises and public sector institutions.
In a move toward applying AI at a population scale, Microsoft is collaborating with the Ministry of Labor and Employment to upgrade key digital public platforms. By integrating Azure OpenAI Service into the government’s e-Shram and National Career Service (NCS) platforms, the initiative aims to serve 310 million informal and gig workers in India. These upgrades will provide multilingual access, AI-assisted job matching, predictive analytics for skill demands, and automated resume creation, thereby improving access to welfare schemes and formal employment.
Recognizing the need for a capable workforce, Microsoft has updated its human capital goals. The company is doubling its previous commitment, now pledging to equip 20 million Indians with essential AI skills by 2030. This follows the progress of the ADVANTA(I)GE India initiative, which has trained 5.6 million people since January 2025.

Finally, the investment addresses the critical need for data security through new digital sovereignty solutions. Microsoft has introduced Sovereign Public Cloud and Sovereign Private Cloud (powered by Azure Local) for Indian customers, enabling strict compliance and governance controls. Additionally, Microsoft 365 Copilot will offer in-country data processing, ensuring that sensitive data remains within India’s borders. This capability targets regulated sectors such as government, banking, and healthcare, strengthening India’s status as one of only four global markets with this localized processing capability.
