When the medical device and pharma unit broke away from Tyco to form a new public company, Covidien, they very quickly hired Amritt to help guide their India R&D strategy and expansion. A few years later this led to the creation of a “captive” engineering facility in Hyderabad in south India with our detailed analysis of a number of possible destinations. The Covidien India Engineering Center was renamed the the Medtronic Engineering & Innovation Center when Covidien merged with the largest independent medical device company on the planet. Hyderabad is now in the state of Telangana, since 2014.
The India Expert is thrilled to see the public news that Medtronic is now expanding the center to over 1,000 jobs with an investment of $160 million and it will become the largest overseas R&D location for the company. Already GE Medical, Siemens, J&J, Stryker and others have significant India technology efforts for the med tech business.
“The expansion of MEIC will help us serve the Medtronic mission to use medical technology to alleviate pain, restore health and extend life for patients around the world, which is also aligned with the government’s vision to improve access to healthcare for patients in India,” said Medtronic Plc executive chairman Omar Ishrak, after a virtual meeting with the Telangana industries minister KT Rama Rao. “It is going to be the largest global R&D centre outside of the United States for Medtronic generating over 1,000 jobs,” Minister K T Rama Rao said, “It will be a big boost to the state and will cement Hyderabad’s position as the hub of the medical device in India,” he said.

MEIC conducts advanced engineering R&D and product development in the areas of design, analysis, advanced hardware-software development and testing, said Madan Krishnan, Medtronic’s vice president for Indian Subcontinent and minimally invasive therapies group. The MEIC will provide software and engineering services across four key verticals – cardiac, neuro, renal and minimally invasive surgery – of the company.
Others present during the announcement include Geoff Martha, Medtronic CEO, Bob White, EVP and President, Minimally Invasive Therapies Group (MITG), Mani Prakash, Vice President R&D, MITG, Subu Mangipudi Vice President RGI Quality & MEIC and Divya Prakash Joshi, senior engineering Director & Site Leader, MEIC Hyderabad.
