Medtronic subsidiary India Medtronic has launched its Mazor X Stealth Edition robotic guidance surgical system across India.
Surgeons at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre in New Delhi used the Mazor X Stealth Edition system to successfully perform the first minimally invasive spine surgery in the country, according to a report in Express Healthcare.
The Mazor X Stealth Edition is co-developed by Medtronic and Mazor Robotics, which Medtronic acquired for $1.7 billion in December 2018. The company launched the surgical system in the U.S. in January 2019.
Using software to plan a surgical procedure and a robotic arm to guide implants and instruments through the steps of the process, the Mazor X Stealth Edition is designed to provide real-time imaging feedback to allow the surgeon to plan and visualize the surgery prior to and during the procedure.
“Minimally-invasive spinal procedures with their smaller incisions can pose a challenge to surgeons due to the limited view of the patient’s anatomy,” Indian Spinal Injuries Center medical director Dr. HS Chhabra told Express Healthcare. “The combination of robotics and navigation provides an opportunity for not only procedural benefits but also the potential for clinical efficiency and improvement in patient outcomes. We can now perform the same spinal surgery with precision as planned along with the ability to confirm through navigation that the implant is going in the location as it was intended to.”
