Marriott International, Inc. announced plans to expand its presence in India. The company has set a target to take the combined number of open and pipeline hotels in the country to 250 by 2025.
Marriott currently operates 140 hotels in India, and is expected to boost its presence in 10 new cities of the country with more than 100 new properties. It will focus on tapping the growth in tier II and tier III cities.
In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Anthony Capuano, president & CEO of Marriott International, stated, “We are in 40 cities today, that should be 50 cities or more by 2025. And maybe what is exciting to me is that results in us creating 10,000 new jobs across India.

I had the good fortune to spend a bit of time with India’s tourism minister and one of the things we talked about is the importance, as an industry and certainly from Marriott’s perspective, to continue to tell the story globally of what a rich and diverse set of experiences the country offers.”
Capuano also met Prime Minister Modi who asked the group to look beyond big cities and look at other places such as India’s pristine islands and palaces. Capuano said, “Modi is keenly focused on continuing growth of the hospitality industry in India. The PM encouraged us to grow not just in primary cities, but in secondary and tertiary cities across the country. He talked with great enthusiasm about the growth of the Indian middle classes.”
