In an interview with the Economic Times, Lenovo‘s co-president for the Mobile Business Group, Aymar de Lencquesaing discussed the ways in which India had become important for the company.
Some excerpts:
Commenting on how much the market in India was important to the company, Lencquesaing said that India was becoming a major player in the smartphone market. “The country is leapfrogging in terms of technology from GPRS to 4G. Once 4G deployment and infrastructure is done and carriers bring attractive tariffs, the migration from feature phones to smartphones will accelerate,” he said.
“India has become unavoidable. It’s a market that vendors must excel in if they want to secure continued growth,” he added.
On Lenovo’s ambitions for the global handset market, Lencquesaing, “We want to become the third largest vendor as soon as possible. It’s not mission impossible at all.”
Currently the second largest in value, and third largest in volume in India, the Chinese company is aiming for the top spot in the Indian market.
