Hollywood’s 2011 martial arts drama Warrior, has been remade as Brothers, a co-production between Lionsgate and Endemol India’s Eyedentity Motion Pictures.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rentrak ranked Brothers in the 10th spot among the top 10 international releases for the weekend of August 15. The movie collected a total worldwide opening haul of about $13 million, dominated by its India take of about $11.2 million.
The remake-of-old-Hollywood-movies trend is beneficial to both Hollywood and Bollywood as it seeks to change the rip-off culture of a certain portion of the Indian movie industry. In the 1980s and 90s, unofficial and unattributed Hollywood “remakes” seemed to dominate the landscape.
Other notable remakes are: We Are Family, an official Bollywood version of the Julia Roberts–Susan Sarandon starrer Stepmom; Fox Star Studios‘ 2014 title BangBang!from Knight and Day; and City Lights, a Hindi remake of the U.K.’s foreign-language Oscar entry Metro Manila.
