Tata Group chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran announced at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit on Wednesday that Tata is close to finalizing plans to build a new semiconductor fabrication plant in Gujarat’s Dholera region this year. The plant construction will start in 2024 as part of Tata’s negotiations with the state government.
Chandrasekaran’s comments come as Prime Minister Narendra Modi makes a final push to attract investments to Gujarat before his re-election bid. Semiconductor manufacturing has been a key priority for Modi’s administration, but the initial $10 billion incentive offers to chipmakers have stalled.
Other companies are following Tata’s lead in investing in Gujarat’s semiconductor industry. South Korea’s Simmtech announced at the summit it will open a chip component plant alongside Micron‘s upcoming semiconductor testing and packaging facility in the city of Sanand, also located in the state of Gujarat.
