India’s minister for Atomic Energy, Dr. Jitendra Singh, announced in the Parliament that the government had approved the installation of ten nuclear reactors (Heavy Water Reactors of 700MW each) in five states across India: Karnataka, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Madhya Pradesh.
The existing nuclear power plants of Kaiga, Chutka and Gorakhpur will each get two nuclear reactors installed, while the Mahi Banswara nuclear powerplant in Rajasthan will get four nuclear reactors. The reactors will be set up in Fleet Mode progressively by the year 2031.
Dr. Singh said that during 2021-2022, the nuclear power reactors generated 47 million units of electricity comprising a little over 3 percent of the total electricity generated in the country. He added that the Government had also approved, ‘in principle’, new sites where nuclear reactors will be set up in the future.”
India’s Department of Atomic Energy noted, “The Government has amended the Atomic Energy Act in 2015 to enable joint ventures of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited with other state-owned entities to set up nuclear power projects.”
