India’s state-run natural gas company GAIL , headquartered in New Delhi, is set to commission its first green hydrogen project in central India in April. The project, located in Madhya Pradesh, will feature a 10-megawatt proton exchange membrane electrolyzer imported from Canada for producing green hydrogen. Once initial commissioning issues are resolved, the sources stated the unit is expected to begin production within a month.

The green hydrogen unit is anticipated to produce approximately 4.3 metric tons of hydrogen per day with a purity of around 99.999% by volume. Notably, the production process will utilize renewable power sources in alignment with India’s ambitious goals for scaling up green hydrogen. The Indian government aims to establish an annual green hydrogen production capacity of 5 million tons by 2030.
This project marks a significant milestone for GAIL and India’s energy transition efforts. Commissioning the green hydrogen facility demonstrates the company’s commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio and embracing clean technologies. Moreover, it positions GAIL as an early mover in the burgeoning green hydrogen sector within India, which could provide a competitive advantage as demand for this renewable fuel increases domestically and globally in the coming years.
