With increasing demand for traditional medicines in the domestic and global market, India’s federal Ministry of Ayush (f0r alternative medicines) and the country’s premier research agency, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), signed a Memorandum of Understanding to boost prospects of Indian herbal products in the global market.
Under the MoU, both organizations will jointly pursue R&D covering:
- fundamental research
- creating Ayush-specific diagnostic tools
- linking microbiomes, gene expression and prakriti (the natural functioning of the human physiology)
- developing multi-ingredient herbal formulations, including their standardization
- exploring modern scientific methods for integration with traditional drugs
- linking disease signatures
- developing international standardized terminologies (disease-morbidity codes) in Ayurveda (the ancient Indian medical system that relies on a “natural” and holistic approach to physical and mental health), Siddha (an ancient system of medicine that originated in the south India, and Unani (Perso-Arabic traditional medicine)
The scope of the MoU also includes the development of bio-pharmaceutical reference standards, development of monographs for important Monoclonal Antibodies, and identification of herbal drugs based on DNA Barcode Analysis, the Center for Cellular and Molecular Biology located at Hyderabad, said.
