During the 10th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit held from 10th – 12th January 2024 at Gandhinagar, in the state of Gujarat, two new memoranda of understanding were signed in the semiconductor sector with the state government.
While addressing the inaugural session of the summit, Jeffery Chun, global CEO of South Korea’s Simmtech, announced an investment of $150 million adding that his company was committed to boosting the growth of the semiconductor ecosystem in India and creating an uninterrupted supply chain network. The unit will be set up in Sanand, near Ahmedabad, for printed circuit board manufacturing.
Boise, Idaho headquartered Micron signed an MoU with New Age Makers Institute of Technology (NAMTECH), an ArcelorMittal -Nippon Steel education initiative, located at the Research Park, IIT Gandhinagar Campus.
This partnership will focus on advancing the development of a talent pipeline required to propel India’s semiconductor manufacturing which is projected to increase four-f0ld to a capitalization of $110 billion by 2030.
The partnership will include experiential education and training programs focused on cultivating a highly proficient, globally competitive pool of talent with diverse and sustainable engineering career paths. This endeavor is aligned with India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s India Semiconductor Mission for capacity development.
Gursharan Singh, Micron’s Senior Vice President of Global Assembly and Test Operations, said, “The partnership enables us to leverage India’s well-established talent pipeline for the semiconductor ecosystem, not just regionally but also on a global scale.”
Micron will look to NAMTECH as an ongoing staffing source for highly trained talent for its global manufacturing units and a steady pipeline for domestic industry. Micron’s upcoming assembly and test facility in Sanand, Gujarat, will create approximately 5,000 direct Micron jobs and 15,000 community jobs in the coming years.
