India’s Federal Government has approved financial assistance of$50 million to government institutions to develop a talent pool that will drive the medical devices industry. This initiative will support dedicated multidisciplinary courses to ensure availability of skilled manpower for futuristic medical technologies, high-end manufacturing, and research.
An official from the department of pharmaceuticals said, “The plan is to also leverage partnerships with foreign academia and industry organizations to develop medical technologies so that India can compete with the world market.”
Industry experts say that when international supply chains became disrupted during the covid-19 pandemic, the government’s attention was drawn to the manufacturing of medical equipment. India took urgent steps to manufacture masks, PPE kits, gloves, sanitizers, thermometers, oximeters. Oxygen therapy equipment such as invasive and non-invasive ventilators, were imported.
Rajiv Nath, forum coordinator, Association of Indian Medical Device Industry, said, “India is 75-80% import dependent; the last two years imports were over ₹60,000 crore. This year the government has announced the Medical Devices Policy in which a key strategy aspect is Human Resources Development. We are glad that the policy is backed by financial outlay to enable government institutions to make tailor-made courses to develop expertise in diverse technologies deployed in medical devices–electronics, metallurgy, electrical, polymer, rubber, chemical and biomedical engineering along with nanotechnology with regulatory and quality management systems.”
