India has become the world’s second largest manufacturer of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as body coveralls. goggles, face-shields, masks, gloves, gowns, head and shoe covers within a short time span of two months, its federal government said. China is the world’s leading producer of PPE. These products are crucial to safeguard against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over 600 companies in India are now certified to produce PPE and production is at 450,000 pieces per day. These include Indian textile leaders such as Arvind, JCT Mills, Trident Group, Welspun and Shahi Exports. While the primary market so far has been within India, the companies are gearing up for exports. The raw materials, with the exception of sealing tapes, are available in India, which puts the country at an advantage over the principle competitors, Vietnam and Cambodia.
According to the Daily Mint India’s Ministry of Textiles has been taking several steps to ensure that both quality and quantity of PPE coveralls. The ministry has taken steps to ensure that only certified players across the entire supply chain are allowed to supply body coveralls.
