India has been granted observer status in the four-nation Eurodrone program. This project, launched by Italy, France, Germany, and Spain, and managed by the Europe-based contracting agency OCCAR, aims to build a Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drone to give Europe greater autonomy in the drone sector. India joins Japan as an observer on this initiative.
The Eurodrone, developed by Airbus, Dassault Aviation, and Leonardo, will have a wingspan of 85 feet and specialize in long-endurance Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions. In October, Eurodrone program officials inspected the mission computer and Gabbiano electronically scanned radar solution for surveillance at sea, on land, and along coastlines in all-weather conditions.
According Airbus, the Eurodrone will be able to operate in non-segregated airspace, carry weapons, and provide capabilities for naval anti-submarine warfare and electronic warfare. It will feature a 2.3-ton payload, 40 hours of autonomy, and a maximum altitude of 45,000 feet. The drone will have twin turboprops positioned behind the wing in a pusher configuration.

Simultaneously, India’s navy launched a submarine, a destroyer, and a frigate at a state-run shipyard, highlighting the importance of protecting the Indian Ocean region, through which 95% of the country’s trade passes, amidst a strong Chinese presence. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized the shifting strategic importance from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean region, which is becoming a center of international power rivalry.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while commissioning the vessels at the state-run Mazagon Dockyard in Mumbai, stated that the commissioning of these three major naval combatants marks a significant leap forward in realizing India’s vision of becoming a global leader in defense manufacturing and maritime security. The move underscores India’s commitment to enhancing its naval capabilities to protect its interests in the region.

By participating as an observer in the Eurodrone program and strengthening its naval fleet, India is taking strategic steps to bolster its defense capabilities and assert its influence in the evolving landscape of international security.
