NTPC Renewable Energy Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of state-owned National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) launched a tender for at least 1.5 GW/9 GWh of cumulative energy storage capacity. NTPC Renewable Energy Limited houses all renewable energy assets developed and owned by the parent.
The storage project needs to be connected to the national grid since almost all power generation projects owned by NTPC are connected directly to the national grid infrastructure. (Projects in India may either be connected directly to the national grid infrastructure or the state grid infrastructure.)
The tender conditions mandate that developers must set up at least 100 megawatts of capacity with 600 megawatt-hours of storage capacity.
Successful bidders and NTPC REL will sign a 25-year energy storage service agreement on an annual fixed charge basis. The storage project will be charged with power from NTPC’s renewable energy projects and supplied to buyers to ensure round-the-clock renewable and/or peak power supplies.
The project is expected to be popular among power distribution utilities across India, many of which now prefer stable renewable energy supply to less expensive but erratic standalone renewable energy supply.
NTPC REL is accepting bids for this project on a build-own-operate basis anywhere in India. Bidding closes on June 16.
